New Midweek Roundup 31st May-3rd June – Video Highlights

A new Midweek Roundup for 31st May to 3rd June is now in the Roundup section. The most notable moments of those four days were:

  • Ian Jeffs scored as Valur won in Iceland
  • Balestier Khalsa won in the S-League
  • Cleaver and Milsom played for TPS in Finland
  • Fram and Valur won to go into the next round of the VISA-bikar




John Gregory embarks on a new Israeli challenge

John Gregory has been appointed the new manager of Israeli Premier League (Ligat Toto) side FC Ashdod on a three year contract.

Gregory had spent the last six months working at Maccabi Ahi Nazareth on a £67,000 a year contract.  The Arab club was relegated from the Israeli top flight on the last game on the season. This was still seen as a good result within the country however as the team was vastly adrift at the bottom of the league on John’s arrival in December.

Craig Short takes charge at Notts County

Craig Short has been announced as the new manager of League One side Notts County. Short had been manager of Hungarian side Ferencváros before being appointed the successor to Steve Cotterill.

The move represents a return to Meadow Lane as Craig played for the midlands club in the early stages of his playing career. He made 128 league appearances in three years for the Magpies before moving to Derby for £2.5 million in 1992.

Notts County go into League One as current champions of League Two but have financial troubles to deal with after the fallout of the Munto Finance reign as owners.

Normal Service Resumes With Two Roundups

Apologies for the lack of updates over the past week or so, a personal change of ISP hit some unforeseen problems. Things are all resolved now though so normal service resumes with the Midweek Roundup from 24-27th May and Weekend Roundup from 28-30th May. The highlights of these seven days were:

  • Matt Garner scoring as IBV win in Iceland
  • Balestier Khalsa go through to the Singapore Cup quarter finals
  • Mahindra United and Viva Kerala finish their I-League season
  • LA Galaxy beat Columbus Crew in the match of the last two unbeaten records in the MLS
  • Interblock lose their relegation playoff so drop out of the PrvaLiga
  • Stuart Baxter’s Finland side draw with Poland

  • Interblock lose the first leg of their relegation playoff
  • Balestier Khalsa draw in the S-League with Daniel Hammond featuring
  • Stuart Baxter’s Finland team lose to Estonia
  • Kris Thackray is a late sub as Ancona lose in Serie B




New Past EFA Profile – Gerry Hitchens (Inter and others)

For the second Past EFA Profile we go back to the sixties to look at the Serie A career of Gerry Hitchens. Staffordshire born striker left Aston Villa in 1961 and went on to spend eight years in Italy. Hitchens played for Internazionale, Torino, Atalanta and Cagliari before returning to England in 1969.

The profile highlights his rise into the England team and his goals against Italy attracting the attentions of Serie A clubs. Gerry’s secret meetings with Jimmy Greaves (while he played for AC Milan)  and how his choice to stay in Italy cost him his international career.
