Waitakere United managed a 2-1 victory over Team Wellington with the winner coming in the 93rd minute in the second leg of the NZFC playoff semi final. The result was made sweeter as this levelled the aggregate score at 4-4, thus putting Waitakere into the final on away goals. Danny Robinson, Neil Sykes, Martin Bullock, and player manager Neil Emblen were all in the starting line up for United.
Jamie Sheldon came on as a second half substitute for Interblock but could do anything to stop his side getting annihilated 5-0 by league leaders Koper. Interblock look set to finish 9th in Prva Liga meaning they will be involved in a relegation playoff at the end of the season.
In the final game of the regular season Maccabi Ahi Nazareth lost 2-0 at home to Bnei Sakhnin, finishing the game with 9 players. John Gregory’s side finish the season in 15th in Ligat Al and now go into the relegation playoff.
Craig Short will be satisfied drawing 1-1 at MTK on Saturday. Ferencváros opened the scoring with another goal by Englishman Anthony Elding which was an absolute screamer from 25 yards. Sam Stockley also played, coming on in the 24th minute for an injury when originally the 32 year old was being given a rest by Short following a busy league and cup schedule recently. Ferencváros rise to 8th in NB I.

In arguably the biggest game of the weekend in terms of English involvement abroad, FC Twente won 2-0 over Heerenveen to remain on top of Eredivisie. Ajax won 7-0 so McClaren’s side still have a four point buffer to second with three games to go. PSV drew 0-0 with Feyenoord to surely end any aspirations they had for the title. FC Twente still have to go to reigning champions AZ in the week and have Feyenoord visit De Grolsch Veste at the weekend. This coupled with Ajax’s amazing form in 2010 (12 wins, 2 draws, 0 losses) means that the Dutch season still has stories to tell.
Carolina RailHawks came out on top over St. Louis, winning 2-0.
Rochester Rhinos got a point away from home with a 1-1 against Miami.
Columbus Crew conceded in time added on to tie 2-2 in Dallas. Andy Iro kept his place in the side (as I recommended he should from his performance a fortnight ago) to be partnered by returning 2-time defender of the year Chad Marshall. Iro was not directly responsible for any of the FC Dallas goals but did lose his man leading to a headed chance in the first half.
LA Galaxy continued their great start to the MLS season with a 2-0 win at Houston Dynamo. Edson Buddle got both goals (ignore the details in the link) to take his total to five goals in three games. Former Bradford Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts kept his third successive clean sheet to set a new MLS record for consecutive clean sheets at the start of a campaign.
Kansas City Wizards recorded a 1-0 win over Gary Smith’s Colorado Rapids. Kei Kamara scored the only goal from a Ryan Smith free kick. Smith continued his good start in the US with an assured performance, a good run and cross come shot was a particular highlight. He will however, have to learn to control his temper as he was booked for descent for throwing the ball very nearly directly at the referee after a free kick was given against him. Craig Rocastle made his Kansas City debut as the midfielder came on for the last nine minutes.
Ryan Smith (no. 11) shot 0:42, booking 2:48, assist 3:05
3 games into the season and the MLS conference league tables make pleasant reading for English eyes. David Beckham’s Los Angeles Galaxy lead the way in the Western Conference with a 100% record while Colorado sit 4th. The only other 100% record belongs to the Wizards at the top of the Eastern Conference, Columbus are 4th in the East having already had a bye week.
In the other NZ Football Conference playoff semi final Auckland city went down to a surprise 3-0 defeat to Canterbury United, losing the tie 4-2 on aggregate. Adam Dickson came on for the last half hour of the game but couldn’t get his name on the score sheet. Canterbury will now face Waitakere in the final.
Darius Vassell (no. 13) shot/cross 2:24
AIK welcomed back Kenny Pavey into the starting line up but he couldn’t change their poor current run of form as they lost 1-0 in a visit to Gefle. AIK have two points from five game and are currently 15th in Allsvenskan.
Kenny Pavey (no. 14) shot 0:44
Jermaine Pennant came on for the last quarter of the game as Real Zaragoza lost 2-0 at Osasuna. Zaragoza slip down to 16th on goal difference in Primera Division, however they do still have a six point buffer to the relegation zone.
Olympiacos suffered bitter sweet emotions in beating Panthrakikos 2-0 because Panathinaikos clinched the Greek Super League title. Matt Derbyshire was in the starting line up for Olympiacos but went off after 23 minutes. Olympiacos are now destined to go into the Champions League playoff between teams finishing 2nd to 5th.
