Weekend Roundup 16-18th April

Neil Emblen’s Waitakere United now have a mountain to climb in the 2nd leg back in New Zealand as they lost the O-League (OFC Champions League) final 1st leg 3-0 against Hekari United in Papua New Guinea. Captain Neil Sykes , Danny Robinson, Martin Bullock and Neil Emblen himself all played full games in this surprising result. If United can overturn the deficit they will book a place at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Steve McClaren stayed on track to be the first English manage to win a major European league since the late, great Sir Bobby Robson as FC Twente beat Feyenoord 2-0. McClaren’s interview after the game is available here. Twente are still top of the Eredivisie, leading by one point.

Xanthi got a vital three points that helped them escape relegation on the final day of the season, winning 4-2 over Iraklis. Nathan Ellington came on in 61st minute and scored the fourth goal 12 minutes later with a very crafty spot kick to confirm the victory. The win moved Xanthi out of the relegation zone place they occupied at the start of the day in Greece, climbing up to finish 13th in the Super League.

Rohan Ricketts finally made his debut for DVTK but unfortunately couldn’t stop them losing 4-2 at Honved. Ricketts came on as a substitute in the 58th minute when the score was already 4-2. Diósgyöri VTK are still bottom of NB I, seven points away from safety with seven games left. Hopefully Rohan who played the last two seasons at Toronto FC in the MLS, can inspire a turn in fortunes for DVTK.

Matt Jones played in goal as Santa Clara got right back into the promotion race with a 3-2 win over Freamunde. Jones didn’t have much of a chance with either of the goals he conceded; the first was a rocket of a free kick where he was unsighted and the second a Freaminde player was left unmarked at the back post. Santa Clara are now 3rd in Liga de Honra, just one point off both the top two in the Portuguese second tier.

Viva Kerala seven match unbeaten run in India came to an abrupt stop as they lost 5-1 to JCT FC. Midfielder Patrick Sisupalan started but was subbed off after 63 minutes.

Mahindra United will be disappointed with losing 2-1 at 10th place Lajong SC. David Booth’s side have now dropped off table toppers Dempo SC in the I-League now being four point behind in 2nd. Viva Kerala drop down to 8th.

Kansas City Wizards’ 1-0 loss at Seattle Sounders was featured in an EFA Game Analysis, giving an in depth recap of the game and examining the performance of winger Ryan Smith. Craig Rocastle was an unused sub for the Wizards. Kansas City are now 2nd in the Eastern Conference.

Craig Short’s Ferencváros won 1-0 over visiting Debrecen. Sam Stockley and Anthony Elding played for Ferencváros and they stay in 8th in NB I.

Hibernians lost 3-1 to Valletta on Friday. Mark Miller’s side are 5th in the Maltese Premier League Championship Group.

Gary Smith’s Colorado Rapids side won 3 – 1 over visiting Toronto FC. Smith’s post match interview is available here. Colorado are 2nd in the Western Conference.

Ancona lost 2-1 to Ascoli in an ill tempered game in which five players were sent off. Kris Thackray wasn’t involved for his loan side. Ancona drop down to 9th in Serie B, Thackray’s parent side Reggina continued their rise away from relegation and are now 13th.

Mark Howard retained his place at centre back for AGF but could stop the team losing 1-0 at Brondby. AGF are 10th in the SAS Ligaen table.

Maccabi Ahi Nazareth drew 2-2 at Hapoel Haifa in a dramatic game. John Gregory’s men scored first, Hapoel Haifa drew level in the 84th and went ahead 89th minute. Nazareth got the equaliser in injury time to earn a point. Maccabi Ahi Nazareth are 5th in the Ligat Al Relegation Playoff.

Interblock will be disappointed with losing 5-1 at 4th place Celje. Jaime Sheldon was in the starting eleven but was subbed off in the 73rd minute. Interblock now face a struggle to avoid a relegation playoff as they are eight points behind the side above them in Prva Liga.

David Beckham’s LA Galaxy won 2-1 over the team that beat them in the MLS Cup final last year, Real Salt Lake. Los Angeles are still unbeaten and top of the Western Conference.

Ankaragücü won 3-1 over Eskisehirspor without Darius Vassell as he is out for the season. The result moves Ankaragücü up to 12th in Super Lig.

Elfsborg had their goalkeeper sent off in the 16th minute and ended up going down 5-1 against IFK Göteborg. James Keene wasn’t in the Elfsborg squad. The Yellow Ones are now 9th in Allsvenskan.

GAIS lost 3-0 to Halmstad with Kyle Patterson coming on for the last third of the game. GAIS slip down to 8th in Allsvenskan.

MyPa lost their first game of the season 3-1 versus Honka. Ben Webster didn’t play for MyPa.

Molde drew 1-1 at Odd Grenland with Ben Amos retaining his place between the posts. Molde are now 12th in Tippeligaen.

Real Zaragoza played out a 0-0 stalemate with Athletic Bilbao; Jermaine Pennant was named on the bench but didn’t get on the field. Zaragoza stay in 16th place in La Liga.

Olympiacos finished off their league fixtures triumphantly, beating Aris 2-1. Matt Derbyshire was still suffering from the injury he suffered last week. Olympiacos finish runners up in the Super League and now go into the four team Champions League place playoff.

Charleroi drew 2-2 at Germinal without on loan striker Paul Taylor being in the squad. Charleroi are set to finish 4th in Jupiter League Playoff II Group B.

APOP Kinyras lost 2-1 to E.N. Paralimni, Marsh Walsh didn’t play. APOP are now 2nd in Cypriot 1. Division Group B.

Young Boys were knocked off top spot as they lost 4-1 at Sion. Scott Sutter was still sidelined by injury. Basel are now top of the Swiss Super League, on equal points with Young Boys.
