Weekend Roundup 23rd-25th April

Neil Emblen’s Waitakere United beat Canterbury United 3-1 in the NZFC Grand Final. Here is EFA’s review of Waitakere United’s Triumph.

Gary Smith’s Colorado Rapids won 2-1 on their visit to New England Revolution. American international midfielder Pablo Mastroeni scored an excellent 30 yard strike in the second half to win the game for the Rapids. John Gregory’s Maccabi Ahi Nazareth took a massive step towards survival in winning 3-0 over H. Petach Tikva. M. Ahi Nazareth are now 3rd in Ligat Al Relegation Playoff with three games left to play.

Young Boys came back from a bad run of two losses in a row to beat Neuchâtel Xamax 4-1. Scott Sutter was still out with his abductor injury. As Basel lost 4-0 at Grasshoppers, Young Boys go back to the top of the Swiss Super League with a three point lead.

Charleroi finished their Belgian season with a 1-0 win over Standard Liege. Paul Taylor wasn’t involved in the contest. Charleroi end the campaign in 4th place in Jupiter League Playoff II Group B.

Kris Thackray made his first start on the season lining up in defence as Ancona lost 1-0 to Sassuolo even though Sassuolo had a man sent off. Ancona are 11th in Serie B after going four games without a win.

AIK drew 1-1 with Häcken, Kenny Pavey continued filling in at right back and played a full match. AIK move up to 13th in Allsvenskan.

Interblock slipped into deeper relegation problems as they lost 2-0 to bottom placed Drava. Jamie Sheldon didn’t make the squad. Interblock stay in 9th in Prva Liga and the relegation playoff place looks like the best they can hope for this season.

Vllaznia Shkodër drew 1-1 with Flamurtari Vlorë on Saturday. Vllaznia Shkodër remains in 7th in Kategoria Superiore.

Ferencváros drew 0-0 at league leaders Videoton, Sam Stockley and Anthony Elding both started. The point pushed Craig Short’s side up to 7th in NB I.

MyPa drew 1-1 against AC Oulu in the second game of the Finnish season, Ben Webster wasn’t involved.

Real Zaragoza almost got a point even though they were a man down but ended up losing 2-1 to Real Madrid. Jermaine Pennant wasn’t even named of the bench. Zaragoza fall to 17th in La Liga, only two points off the relegation zone.

Columbus Crew won 1-0 against visiting Real Salt Lake. Andy Iro started at centre back again as it seems he is tying down a first team spot after being in and out of the side last season. Columbus are still unbeaten in MLS and are 3rd in the Eastern Conference having only played three games so far this season.

Matt Jones played in goal for Santa Clara who were unlucky to lose 5-2 to Trofense as score was 2-2 with 12 minutes to go.  Trofense got their third goal from the penalty spot after Jones had fouled a striker from a contested ball Matt was second to. If they had drawn they would now be in 2nd and if they had won they would be top. However, with the loss they are one point off the promotion places as they sit 4th in Liga de Honra.

AGF lost 3-0 to bottom side HB Køge, Mark Howard was an unused sub. AGF have dropped into 11th and a relegation place in SAS Ligaen with four games left to play.

GAIS conceded a goal in injury time to only end up with a 2-2 draw against Kalmar. Kyle Patterson came on late in second half for GAIS, Calum Angus was unused sub. GAIS are 9th in the Allsvenskan table after eight games.

Ryan Smith started for Kansas City Wizards as they played out a goalless draw with LA Galaxy. Craig Rocastle was on the bench for the Wizards but didn’t come on. Kansas City are 2nd in the Eastern Conference and Los Angeles are still unbeaten as they sit top of the Western Conference.

APOP/Kinyras lost 4-0 to E.N. Paralimni in Cyprus. Apop are 3rd in Cypriot 1. Division Group B

Elfsborg won 4-1 over Trelleborg with James Keene being an unused sub. Elfsborg go up to 5th in Allsvenskan.

Hibernians will be kicking themselves for losing 5-4 to Birkirkara after being 4-1 up themselves after 34 minutes. Mark Miller’s side slip down to 6th in the Maltese Premier League Championship Group following a poor run of form.

Ankaragücü without the injured Darius Vassell got a 0-0 draw at Denizlispor. The point makes Ankaragücü mathematically safe in Super Lig as they stay in 12th.

Rohan Ricketts didn’t play as DVTK lost 3-1 against Haladas. DTVK remain at the bottom of NB I.
